Water streams into a stainless steel sink that contains a yellow sponge. Water is essential for photosynthesis and makes up to 60 to 70 percent by weight of all living organisms. Although three-quarters of the Earth's surface is covered with water, it is estimated that only 0.37 percent of that water is drinkable. In addition the groundwater we access via wells with pumps accounts for 0.28 percent of the freshwater around the planet.
