A fallen, brown, decaying leaf on moss covered with drops of water, Cheesequake State Park, Matawan, New Jersey. The uniqueness of Cheesequake State Park is not only that it is geographically located in in the middle of the urban areas of northern Jersey and the suburban areas of southern New Jersey, but also that it lies in in an ecological transitional zone between two different ecosystems. Saltwater and freshwater marshes, a white cedar swamp, Pine Barrens, northeastern hardwood forest and open fields are the primary characteristics of the park.
