A compact fluorescent light bulb, or CFL, lights the interior of a metal hanging lampshade, in an office in Washington, DC. While the United States Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, encourages Americans to use CFLs in their homes to save energy and prevent greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA also warns that since CFLs contain mercury, a poison that interferes with the brain and nervous system, caution must be utilized during the cleanup and disposal of compact fluorescent lights.
