A narrow beam of sunlight entering a room through a small window illuminates daffodils in a vase. Daffodils are the March birth flower and symbolize rebirth, respect, regards, and unrequited love. Belonging to the genus narcissus, daffodils are also known as jonquils. The popular spring-flowering bulbs contain toxic alkaloids. Typical poisoning scenarios include consumption of leaves and stems by livestock or children. During the Second World War, starving cattle in the Netherlands were fatally poisoned after being fed daffodil bulbs.
