An American Bison rests on the ground in a wallow, Yellowstone National Park. At one time bison roamed across much of North America and their numbers were estimated to be 20-30 million. In the 1870s the bison population was reduced during a mass slaughter which reduced the population to 10,91 in 1889. Today the bison are ecologically extinct throughout most of their historic range, exept for a few national parks and other small wildlife areas.
